Hillary Clinton's Selective Science on HPV

By Tony Perkins, Tony Perkins' Washington Update from the Family Research Council, November 21, 2005

Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) is urging that decisions on vaccines to prevent HPV (a sexually transmitted disease that can cause cervical cancer) be "based on science not politics," and she warns ominously that "recent press reports indicate that certain organizations are beginning to mobilize against the vaccine."

The senator shouldn't believe everything she reads. Despite the apparent determination of the media to paint FRC as "anti-vaccine," we have declared clearly that FRC "welcomes the news that vaccines are in development" for human papillomavirus (HPV). However, what's good for the vaccine ("science not politics") should be good for condoms, too. Yet we haven't heard Sen. Clinton speak out in support of condom labels that would declare, accurately, that there is no scientific evidence showing condoms are effective in preventing the transmission of HPV. That may be because many liberal groups actively oppose the scientifically accurate labeling of condoms, fearing it might discourage their use against HIV.

Clinton notes that "even if HPV were no longer a threat to health, the other, very serious ramifications of unprotected sex, including pregnancy and contraction of HIV/AIDS and other STDs--would still remain." That's exactly why FRC will continue to highlight the scientific fact that unlike a condom or a vaccine, only the practice of abstinence until marriage, faithfulness, and monogamy can prevent ALL of those "serious ramifications" at once.
